Description
Foundations of Canadian Law is a core subject for NCA candidates and requires more than memorizing historical sources or listing legal traditions. Students must understand how Canada’s legal system developed, how doctrines such as federalism, parliamentary supremacy, Indigenous legal traditions, and statutory interpretation interact, and how courts and scholars debate these principles in practice.
The course is designed to help students identify foundational legal issues, state the governing theories and doctrines accurately, apply them to complex fact patterns, and present a clear and well‑organized answer within the time available in the NCA examination.
Classes focus on both conceptual understanding and practical exam preparation. Students will learn how to distinguish between related doctrines, avoid common analytical errors, approach hypothetical scenarios with confidence, and write answers that are legally supported and responsive to the question asked.
