Description
Canadian Criminal Law is a core subject for NCA candidates that requires far more than understanding the statutory provisions and leading case law. Students must deeply understand how the elements of an offence (actus reus and mens rea) operate, how courts evaluate criminal liability and defences, understanding the bail provisions, principles of sentencing and how to apply these principles to complex factual scenarios.
This course is designed to help students:
Identify criminal offences, defences, and Charter issues.
Accurately state the governing legal rules and statutory provisions.
Apply the appropriate legal tests for criminal liability and defences.
Present clear, well-organized answers within the strict time limits of the NCA examination.
What to Expect
Classes focus on a dual approach of conceptual understanding and practical exam preparation. You will learn how to break down offences, structure your analysis of defences, avoid common analytical errors, confidently approach hypothetical fact patterns, and write answers that are strictly responsive to the question asked.
